Ingredients
For the burgers:
- 1 1/2 lbs ground beef (80/20 recommended)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
For the toppings:
- 1 ripe avocado, sliced or mashed
- 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tomato, sliced
- Lettuce leaves
For the burger sauce:
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tsp pickle juice (optional)
- Pinch of paprika or cayenne (optional)
Instructions
- Make the sauce: In a small bowl, stir together mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle juice, and paprika. Set aside or refrigerate.
- Form and season patties: Divide ground beef into 4 equal patties. Season both sides with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Grill the burgers: Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Grill patties for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until desired doneness. Add cheese during the last minute of cooking and let melt.
- Assemble the burgers: Spread burger sauce on the bottom buns. Add lettuce, tomato, and the grilled burger patty. Top with avocado slices and red onion. Finish with the top bun.
- Serve: Serve immediately with fries, chips, or a fresh salad.
Notes
You can mash the avocado with lime juice and salt for a guacamole-style topping.
Turkey, chicken, or plant-based patties work great too.
Toast buns on the grill for extra flavor and texture.
