Whether you grill them at a cookout or bake them at home, these customizable packets are perfect for camping, family dinners, or weeknight meals.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups carrots, sliced
  • 1/2 cup sliced onion (optional)
  • 4 teaspoons butter (1 teaspoon per packet)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • Aluminum foil

Instructions

Preheat the grill to medium heat or preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Divide the mixture and shape it into four equal patties.

Tear four large sheets of aluminum foil. On each piece, layer sliced potatoes, carrots, and additional onion if using. Place a beef patty on top and add a teaspoon of butter to each packet.

Fold the foil tightly around the contents to create sealed packets, ensuring no steam can escape.

Grill the foil packets for 30–35 minutes or bake for 35–40 minutes, until the vegetables are fork-tender and the patties are cooked through.

Carefully open each packet (watch for steam), sprinkle cheddar cheese over the patties if desired, and allow it to melt before serving.

Notes

Customize your packets with vegetables like sweet potatoes, zucchini, or bell peppers. For extra flavor, add a splash of Worcestershire or BBQ sauce to each packet before sealing. These packets are also perfect for meal prep—assemble ahead of time and keep them chilled until ready to cook.
