Ingredients

Pastry and Filling

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 2 apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

For Assembly

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (optional, for topping)
  • Optional: powdered sugar or icing for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the filling: In a bowl, toss the apple slices with brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and flour. Set aside.
  3. Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and transfer it to the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Assemble the braid:
    • Place the apple mixture down the center third of the pastry, leaving space at the edges.
    • On both outer thirds, cut diagonal strips about 1 inch apart.
    • Fold the strips over the filling, alternating sides to create a braid pattern. Tuck the ends under to seal.
  5. Brush the pastry with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar, if desired.
  6. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  7. Cool slightly before slicing. Drizzle with icing or dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.

Notes

  • Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best texture.
  • This pastry can be served warm or at room temperature.
  • Add chopped nuts or raisins to the filling for extra texture and flavor.
