Description

A comforting, hearty dish featuring seasoned hamburger steaks smothered in a creamy mushroom sauce, this Amish-style bake is perfect for family dinners. It’s budget-friendly, easy to prepare, and full of traditional, homey flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • lbs ground beef

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For the Sauce:

  • 1 (10 oz) can cream of mushroom soup

  • ½ cup milk

  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

For Serving (Optional):

  • Fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

1. Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.

2. Make the Hamburger Steaks

In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 4–6 oval patties.

3. Sear the Patties

In a skillet over medium heat, sear the patties for 2–3 minutes per side until browned. They don’t need to be fully cooked—just nicely browned. Transfer to the baking dish.

4. Prepare the Sauce

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth. Pour the sauce over the patties in the baking dish. Top with sliced onions and mushrooms (if using).

5. Bake

Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30–35 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for 10 more minutes, or until the sauce is bubbling and the patties are fully cooked through.

6. Garnish and Serve

Sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley (optional) and serve warm with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered egg noodles.

Notes

  • Cream Substitute: No cream of mushroom? Use cream of chicken soup instead.

  • Make It Low-Carb: Replace breadcrumbs with almond flour for a keto-friendly version.

  • Vegetables: Add diced celery or carrots to the sauce for extra flavor and texture.

  • Make Ahead: Assemble up to the baking step and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking.
